Kailua history
Kailua was originally a small town out in the country. In the early 1900's, activity in Kailua was centered around the area where Castle Medical Center stands today. Several businesses, such as the Akam Store (at Auloa Road and Kalanianaole Highway), Kodama Store (where Castle Medical's employee parking lot now stands), and Matsuda Store (behind Castle Medical Center) served the the community. Kailua's population was approximately 3,000 people. Area residents were primarily farmers and laborers. A few of Oahu's affluent families owned homes at Kailua Beach.
After World War II, construction of the Pali Highway provided a faster way for people to travel to and from Honolulu. Kaneohe Ranch (a major landowner on the windward side) sold off its land, which was gradually converted to residential properties. Kailua grew quickly and became the popular neighborhood that we know today.
