Kaimuki real estate
Kaimuki is prized for its convenient location just above Diamond Head and near Manoa Valley, home to the University of Hawaii's main campus. Most of Kaimuki's homes have been around awhile, often built in the 1940's and '50's. Some owners renovate their homes and keep them in top shape. Some retirees sell their homes as fixers and then move into condos to get away from cutting grass and painting the fence.
One thing is certain - it's a popular neighborhood. The beaches of Diamond Head and Waikiki are a couple of miles away. Access to the H-1 freeway for getting around the island is a snap. The Kaimuki Shopping Center is great for groceries, going to Long's Drugs and getting a snack. Kahala Mall is just beyond Koko Head Avenue, offering movie theaters and more places to shop.

History and location of Kaimuki
The name Kaimuki translated from Hawaiian to English means "The ti root oven." Kaimuki was the area where Menehune built their ti root ovens according to legend.
Waialae Avenue became Kaimuki's first paved road around 1925. The H-1 freeway was built in the 1960's and it diverted traffic away from Kaimuki's merchants. The commercial district now thrives on business from local residents who eat at the mom and pop as well as upscale restaurants.
Boundaries of Kaimuki are Kapahulu Avenue to the west and 22nd Avenue to the east. North of Kaimuki we find Palolo and Wilhelmina Rise, Diamond Head is south.
