Portlock homes and real estate
Portlock is a neighborhood along Maunalua Bay in Hawaii Kai. Ocean frontage for home on the water varies from sandy beach to rocky coastline. Some properties are on cliffs high above the water, providing panoramic views, privacy and still accessible to the ocean.
The hillside above Portlock is government land. On the other side of the hillside (Kokohead) is Hanauma Bay, famous for its reef and abundance of fish.
Access to and from Portlock is via Kalanianaole Highway. As the highway heads towards Honolulu, it becomes the H-1 freeway near Kahala. For driving to Kailua and other windward areas, just go east on Kalanianaole Highway. Enjoy the views of Sandy Beach, Makapuu and the coastline of east Oahu.

History of Portlock
Portlock became a prominent area in the late 1950's as Henry Kaiser was developing neighborhoods in Hawaii Kai. One of his employees built a home on the water and Mr. Kaiser periodically visited to see how the property was coming along. Mr. Kaiser noted the vacant hillside at the end of Portlock Road. The location provided great views of Maunalua Bay and Diamond Head.
Mr. Kaiser decided to purchase a seven-acre parcel at the end of Portlock Road and build his last estate. Kaiser passed away in 1967 and the property has changed ownership several times.
Japanese billionaire Genshiro Kawamoto bought the estate in 1988 for $42.5 million, which is still a record for the highest priced property sold in Hawaii. Ownership of the land was leasehold with the fee held by Bishop Estate. Bishop Estate offered the fee simple interest to Mr. Kawamoto for $26 million and he walked away from it. Bishop Estate took the property back and sold it fee simple to other individuals.
The estate is currently (12/08) for sale, priced at $80 million. It's owned by the Fred and Annie Chan, who made their fortune in high-tech businesses and later in property development. The actual sale price will likely be much less, given the slow real estate market.
